Under the leadership of a James Beard award-winning chef, the bar and restaurant provide an enhanced destination for tourists, while the 171 bedrooms provide a warm and inviting environment while maintaining a basic style. Inspired by the history and natural surroundings of Basking Ridge, oak plays an important role in the hotel’s interior design, among other hand-crafted components such as oil-rubbed bronze, polished brass, and hand-knotted rugs.

The Banana Leaf Apolo

Banana Leaf Apolo, a family-run Indian restaurant in Singapore since 1974, intended to expand from shophouses to shopping malls. Gensler was hired to design Apolo’s newest store in Singapore’s Parkway Parade Mall, as well as to establish a new brand image that may assist tap into a larger and more diversified customer.

The resulting space and brand design emanate a modern, welcoming front with hints of Indian flair while remaining true to Indian culture, customs, and dining conventions. As part of Marriott’s Autograph Collection, Gensler restored Baton Rouge’s first skyscraper to its former glory and converted it into an elite, boutique hotel. The design effortlessly integrates and juxtaposes Art Deco, Mid-Century, and contemporary furniture, lighting, and artwork, as well as commercial features linked to the building’s roots as the Louisiana National Bank in 1925 and expansion as the State Office Building in the 1960s.

Several ancient components throughout the hotel, including eight bas-relief murals, a sculpted marble entry staircase, and eight Greek-revival fluted columns, were blended into the contemporary design to preserve the building’s past. Within the building’s limited architectural plan, the 144-key hotel includes a conference center, fitness facility, and two restaurants.

Following the success of its Reston location, this modern seafood restaurant chose a prominent corner spot in a new Bethesda development for its next attempt. This room is more casual, reflecting the local feel, while maintaining the nautical theme of its prior site.

The restaurant’s first impression is distinctive, evoking “a day at the bay,” with a view through the area to an eye-catching fish sculpture behind the bar. Through folding glass doors, one corner of the bar connects to an adjacent patio and street frontage, bringing a layer of vibrancy to the room and enlivening the customers’ experience.
