Andre Fu and his Studio AFSO designed the mesmerising restaurant Yu Yuan Restaurant at the Four Seasons Hotel in Seoul. These elegant and contemporary designs are inspired by Chinese tradition, embracing details, opulent finishes and rich colours.
This acknowledgement of traditional values has been set against a backdrop of green lacquer and characterful marble stone, creating an unforgettable dining experience that translates directly into the dining presentation and service of the restaurant.
Named after the famed Shanghai rock garden, references can be seen in the Yuyuan Garden throughout the restaurant’s design, including the use of ornate decorative trees and echoes of the rock faces within the patterns of the marble cladding the reception desk and bar areas.
Further connections to nature can also be seen in the sculptural forms of the side table lamps, constructed from the twisting gnarled wood of aged trees. Another prominent feature is the theme of interwoven fabric, twists and knots that can be seen on the screen divides and large decoration sections within the reception.
These large 3D interpretations of knots have been finished in elegant champagne gold, a colour often associated with luxury, purity, and fulfilment, whilst the decoration can be interpreted as an appreciation and admiration for Chinese craftsmanship and textiles, skills often admired from across the globe.
Each of the seven private dining spaces contains a bespoke pendant light, constructed from curved crystal rods in reference and continuing the theme of textiles and knots on an impressive scale.
Art is not only seen in the lighting, Contemporary Korean artist, Lee Gill Rae, has created an impressive bronze branch installation that acts as a centrepiece to the main dining space, backed in an emerald green lacquer and framed either side by two inset gold bands.
