The design of the tea house is simple but elegant. Bamboo as the outer courtyard; cereal grass as the rooftop; wooden blocks as the front door, the whole space is tranquil and relaxing. The first floor is six-meter tall with Diamond Sutra written on its walls. The central area can accommodate around eight to nine people. On a cold and rainy night in Sichuan, gathering around charcoal stoves can offer a great comfort. People rarely sit on the second floor due to its limited space. However, the tea house theater on the third floor is an open area that features a series of activities.

The fourth floor is an elegant Japanese style tea house. The wall is a mixture of yellow mud and cereal grass, applied to wooden frames which have a soothing smell.

The owner of the Tea of Humbleness, Lai Xiaoxia, learned her skills from Taiwanese tea master Li Shuyun. In 2008, she came back to her hometown and opened a tea house in downtown area. “Tea of Humbleness” focuses on promoting Oolong tea of great quality and tea utensils in Taiwan while adding some Taiwanese characteristics in the store. In recent years, enamel becomes one of the main features in the Tea of Hubleness tea house due to the fact that Lai’s husband, Huang Boyan, has long been passionate about traditional art, especially about enamel, which is a combination of porcelain and metal, which stems from traditional artisan.

Cottage of Integrity derives from a famous poem from renowned poet Bai Juyi, where he describes the integrity he upholds and the open-mindedness he has towards life. Although with professional licenses in tea art and Chinese zither, the owners of the tea house have been humble. They do not advertise much about Cottage of Integrity, yet students and customers come from all over the country to learn from them.

Famous designer Alan Chen built Bamboo Leaf Teahouse on his own. Located on the south side of the busy Shenxian street, this three-story building embodies the philosophy of Zen. When you entered the tea house, you can see the embodiment of ‘Tao Te Ching‘, where bamboos and the crystal-like pond form a visual art feast of tradition and modern interior design. On the second floor, the Japanese decoration and Buddha status also brings out the characteristics of Eastern aesthetics, which makes the place the best choice for enjoying a cup of tea with friends. On the third floor, it is a perfect place for individuals to take a sip of tea and enjoy the beautiful scenery outside. Perhaps that is also why famous chess players Lee Sedol and Gu Li choose this begin their chess match, a place that’s peaceful and philosophical.

This is the only tea house in Chengdu that comes with solely one tea table. People come here more than have a nice cup of tea. Tea Aesthetics is located near the river, and the two-floor wooden house is a typical design in western Sichuan region. Chengdu designer Wong He boldly poured in traditional concept into the modern design and built this unique building. The most attracting scenes in the tea house are the wall covered with thirteen Guanyin pictures.

The owner has collected a wide range of stunning tea utensils, including Japanese silver pots from Yinchuan hall, iron pots from Kisendo, and Li Xiaobai silver pots from Li Xiaobai in Yunnan Dali. In Tea Aesthetics, everything from decoration, utensils, and music delivers genuinely embodies art.

The owner of the tea house has been learning from Taiwanese masters for years, so she is experienced in Taiwanese tea culture. Tea house owner goes to tea farms herself to collect tea, insisting on picking the tea leaves of the best quality. It is also the reason why the store is always full of customers. Besides drinking tea, Ruo Ni wants to bring the public more knowledge of tea. She opens another cultural experience shop nearby to engage more people in appreciating tea culture.  

Philosophy of Life

 The thirty-year-old cherry blossom tree by the corner of walls always amazes people during spring. The tea house owner, Wu Bao, said that the tree is why people first fall for “Philosophy of Life”. After the guests finish their Puer tea, they will fill in a note documenting the tea utensils they used and times of brewing. After they scan the bar code on the edge of the paper, the brewing instructions will appear on the phone.

Grass house of Purity

Grass house of Purity

Grass house of Purity situated near a small yard surrounded by a banyan tree and bamboos. People can hardly see what is inside the store, except a metal signboard made in Suzhou, reminding the guests where the entrance is. The courtyard is typical of Japanese style, where stones construct a neat path and the plants outgrow their surroundings. Besides, there is a blue monk parakeet called “Qiu Qiu”, always worrying about the wildcat outside of the yard.

The decoration in the store is a combination of Taiwanese and Japanese style. The mattresses’ pattern is from the roll grass pattern of Dynasty Tang; tea utensils are made of kiln; ikebana is designed by the owner; cushions are brought back by the owner from Taiwan.
